This is where a good gravy/fat separator can come in handy.

The Trudeau 0991105 Gravy/Fat Separator creates a smooth fat reduced gravy by filtering the lumpy bits and the fat through a fitted strainer.

This pitcher was voted as the best fat/gravy separator by Cooks Illustrated in 2004.

What We Like

  • The pitcher is heat resistant to 400F – this doesn’t mean you should be putting this in the oven however. What this means is that the gravy you pour into the pitcher can be as hot as 400F without causing the pitcher to crack.
  • It is microwave safe.
  • This gravy/fat separator is dishwasher safe so you won’t need to hand wash this one.
  • It comes with a 5 year warranty.
  • It holds up to 4 cups of gravy so is a pretty decent size.

REVIEW: Sammy Knife from Rachael Ray and Furi – The Perfect Sandwich Knife

Well it’s not so much the features but that fact that they are all combined into the one handy sandwich knife. So you don’t need to get out the bread knife to slice up the bread and then a spreader to spread the butter and fillings and then find a knife that will fit under the rim to get the very last bit out of a jar. The Sammy Knife is made for Rachael Ray by Furi. Furi originally started out in Australia but started to promote their products to the US market. This turned out to be a wise decision as Furi became quite popular amongst both chefs and home cooks.

Rachael Ray loved the brand so much that she teamed up with Furi to create a range of knives and sharpening systems in her own signature colors and styles.

Let’s look at some of the features…

THE BLADE

First of all the Sammy Knife has a round tooth serrated edge. This makes it easy to cut breads and crusts. Buy hey, all bread knives have serrated edges so that’s really nothing new. What the round serrated edge does however is ensure that there is a smoother cut when cutting sandwiches.

I’m sure we’ve all had the experience of slicing a sandwich in half only to have it tear and squash the bread. Essentially it is ruined but the rounded edges prevent this from happening. The rounded edges also ensure that the edges stay sharper for longer.

The end of the blade is rounded and what this becomes is a spreader for spreading butter and other spreads easily onto breads.

What would have to be one of the best features of this knife is the cut-out on the top of the blade. This is to enable you to scrape out the remaining spreads, jams, peanut paste or whatever from under the rim of jars.

THE HANDLE

The handle on the Rachael Ray Sammy Knife is made from a thermoplastic elastomer molded over a tough polypropylene core. Now I have no idea what I just said but essentially it means that the knife has a secure grip.

It also has a good ergonomically designed handle so it’s comfortable to hold and it is made in a way that your hand won’t slip forward even if wet or oily.

IS IT DISHWASHER SAFE?

Unfortunately no. The Sammy Knife needs to be hand washed but hey, it’s not like we are washing a 10 piece cookware set here. It’s a knife so a quick scrub and it’s clean.

WHAT COLOR?

The Sammy Knife is available in Rachael Ray’s signature orange, the most popular of all Rachael Ray colors.
