726508e2.JPGIn the days before (Shock – Horror) MacDonalds, KFC, Wendy’s and all those other fast food joints, my grandmother and I would drop into the local Adams Bruce ice cream shop for a treat when we went out shopping for the weekend groceries on Friday’s.

That’s right – the shops didn’t open over the weekend so we had to stock up on Friday with enough food to last the weekend. And as I have already mentioned there were no fast food outlets.

Adams Bruce were  and are well known throughout New Zealand for their exquisite Queen Anne Chocolates as well as their ice cream.  And if you are visiting NZ, I recommend you try some Queen Anne chocolates for an absolute taste treat.

My favorite dessert was a banana split which was served on a Glass banana Split Sundae Dish. I was able to select three scoops of ice cream and as I am very unadventurous with my food, I would select vanilla only. The lady would then slice a banana in half and place it down each side of the ice cream and also place some banana circles and strawberries on the top, then she would add cream in swirly clouds and top with hundreds and thousands – you know those little candy lollies in various colors and pop a cherry on top.

Everything in the shop was always spotless and clean and the lady behind the counter always wore a snowy white apron.  She and my  grandmother would chat for a while and then we would take a seat and wait to be served, my grandmother would have an ice cream in a cone.  But because I tended to bite the crunchy bottom off before beginning to eat the ice cream, I would invariably end up with ice cream dripping down the front of my clothes.  Hence the reason that I was given the banana split sundae.

My husbands family had a miniature black and white fox terrier (old and ugly it was but had been in their family for years), and whenever they took her up Karangahape Rd past Adams Bruce, Lady (ugly dogs name) would sit and not move until she was given an ice cream in a cone to eat.  Even Lady appreciated good quality ice cream.
