A History of the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer

As our regular readers are aware, we love the KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer and have written a detailed review on the benefits of owning one. So I thought you might like to read the history behind this great looking, excellent performing machine.

The KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer has its origins in the first standing mixer powered by electricity. This first mixer was designed by Herbert Johnson in 1908, and it was primarily designed for commercial use in large bakeries.

Johnson’s 80-quart electric stand mixer was scaled down to a home “food preparer” and was sold by the newly renamed KitchenAid company in 1919. The new 1919 version of the KitchenAid Stand Mixer was still a bulky machine that weighed around 65 pounds. On top of that, it cost $189.50, or around $2,300 in present day cost.

In 1936, KitchenAid hired an industrial designer to redesign their stand mixer. Three new models were produced, and the Streamline KitchenAid shape that still characterizes these machines was developed. The price was cut to around $55, making KitchenAid mixers much more affordable for home use.

Over the years, KitchenAid stand mixers gained a reputation for quality and versatility as a food preparation tool. Virtually from the start, KitchenAid offered a variety of attachments that would allow the machine to perform many different functions. Early attachments included the food grinder, citrus juicer and pea shucker.

KitchenAid began to offer stand mixers in a bright array of colors in 1955. KitchenAids became available in Petal Pink, Satin Chrome, Sunny Yellow, Island Green and Antique Copper.

Although more than 90 years have passed since the introduction of the first KitchenAid, the machine has remained much the same in many ways. Today’s stand mixers are still produced in the same factory in Greenville, Ohio where the very first 1919 model was manufactured. The mechanics of the original mixer have been altered so little, attachments made in 1919 will still fit today’s KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer.

Today there are many more colors to choose from when it comes to purchasing a KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer, but the spirit behind offering the original color varieties in 1955 remains the same. Colorful choices make buying, owning and using a KitchenAid stand mixer more fun and exciting for owners.

The tradition of designing useful attachments that allow the KitchenAid to serve as many roles as possible in the kitchen is also in place now as it was in the past. Today, the Artisan Stand Mixer can not only mix dough and batters, but can serve as a food grinder, citrus juicer, sausage maker and pasta maker, to name but a few roles it can serve.

So there you have it, the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer - a product manufactured with performance and style, just right for your everyday baking needs.

The Best Stand Mixer – Kitchenaid Artisan Stand Mixer

At long last we’ve added a review for the Kitchenaid Artisan Stand Mixer. This beautiful piece of equipment is one of those ‘must haves’ for any keen baker or home cooker.

We found it hard to find anything we didn’t like about this mixer. For starters, it receives extremely good ratings from consumers – at time of writing this post over 1300 people gave this stand mixer a 5 star rating on Amazon. That’s pretty amazing really.

It’s also just a pleasure to look at this mixer. You won’t be keeping this one away in a cupboard.

The only problem you might find with this mixer is trying to figure out what color to choose. Kitchenaid have provided over 25 colors so really there’s no excuse for finding one to match your kitchen decor. I personally like Empire Red which is the color you see in the picture to the left.

One of the best things about the Kitchenaid Artisan Stand Mixer is the number of attachments you can add to this thing. This really makes this a multipurpose appliance. The beater, dough hook and wire beater come packaged with your stand mixer…all other attachments are at any extra cost. The attachments include an ice cream maker, pasta maker, sausage maker, citrus juicer and many more.

Review: Kitchenaid Pasta Maker Attachment

kitchenaid-pasta-maker-attachmentFirst of all, to use this attachment you need to own a Kitchenaid Stand Mixer.  Once you have one of these fantastic mixers then you can get yourself  all sorts of really great attachments  and one of these is the nifty pasta maker attachment.

I love fresh pasta. It seems to have a fresher, almost creamier texture. And of course, when making your own homemade pasta you know exactly what has gone into it so you know it is a healthy alternative for all the family.

The KitchenAid Pasta Maker Attachment only actually works if you have a Kitchenaid food grinder attachment but this is included in this particular pack. If you already have the food grinder you will want to just purchase the additional pieces separately. You can do that here – KitchenAid Pasta Maker Plates.

What’s Included:

  • Food Grinder
  • Thin spaghetti plate
  • Thick spaghetti plate
  • Flat noodle plate
  • Macaroni plate
  • Lasagne plate
  • Bowl clips
  • Cleaning tool
  • Plate storage case

Now this is one of those products that receives really mixed reviews from those who rave over how fantastic this product is to those who are bitterly disappointed.

A lot of the concerns relate to how the pasta mix had to be just right for this attachment to work. Those that seemed to get the right consistency found the product well worth the money.

Review: Kitchenaid Pouring Shield Attachment Review

kitchenaid-pouring-shield-attachmentThe Kitchenaid Pouring Shield attaches to a Kitchenaid stand mixer to help with adding ingredients as well as preventing splashing when mixing.

The Kitchenaid Pouring Shield fits all Kitchenaid 4.5 qt stand mixers and 5qt stand mixers with the exception of the 5qt lift bowl models.

Consumer reviews are mixed for this product with some loving this handy attachment and others finding that it caused more problems than it was worth. The problem seemed to center around the attachment not fitting properly and coming loose.

I think the problem may be related to the fact that consumers have purchased the wrong size pouring shield for their stand mixer. As we have already indicated this does not fit 5qt lift bowl models and unfortunately a number of online cookware merchants do not indicate this in their description.

What We Like

  • This attachment is dishwasher safe.
  • It makes adding ingredients super easy.
  • It prevents foods from splashing around your kitchen.

What We Don’t Like

  • The issue with the pouring shield not fitting properly seems to be a widespread problem. Ensure that when purchasing that you check that you are getting the right size pouring shield for your Kitchenaid stand mixer.

Kitchenaid Professional 600 Stand Mixer Review

kitchenaid-professional-600-mixer-reviewThe Kitchenaid Professional 600 Mixer is one of the most powerful in the range of Kitchenaid stand mixers and it is also one of the more popular.

With an impressive array of colors this is one stand mixer that will definitely look the part in any kitchen.

Read on to see what we like and don’t like about the Kitchenaid Professional 600 Mixer.

What You Get

  • The mixer…well of course!
  • Professional Wire Whip
  • Burnished Flat Beater
  • Wide Chute Pouring Shield
  • 6qt Stainless Steel Bowl with Handle
  • Burnished Power Knead Spiral Hook

What We Like

  • The Kitchenaid Professional 600 Mixer easily gets through even the heaviest of mixes including bread dough.
  • The 10 speed setting means that you have greater control especially for delicate foods.
  • This mixer has a massive 14 flour cup capacity – this is the equivalent of 8 loaves of white bread, 13 dozen cookies or 8 pounds of mashed potatoes.
  • The PowerKnead attachment replicates the same action as hand kneading so is perfect for those who love to bake their own bread.
  • The commercial style motor ensures that this mixer will take a beating (no pun intended).
  • It also looks good with its polished stainless steel bowl and with the choice of 11 different colors this will suit any kitchen.
  • We love the soft start feature. This means that when you turn it on your ingredients don’t get scattered all over the kitchen.

What We Don’t Like

  • This is a solid mixer so that means that it is heavy. If you are going to be lifting it in and out of a kitchen cupboard on a regular basis you will need strong muscles. The alternative is to leave it on the kitchen counter but you will obviously need the space.
  • When on high speed this mixer can get a little noisy. However, I doubt this would be much different with most stand mixers on the market.

Our Recommendation

If you do a lot of baking then the Kithenaid Professional 600 Mixer is a must have and especially so if you bake a lot of bread. This is one mixer we definitely recommend.

Oprahs Favorite Cookware KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer

oprah-winfreyLike all of us,  Oprah Winfrey has a couple of  favorite pieces of kitchenware.

One of these pieces it the KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer which is available in wide range of beautiful colors including this  radiant tangerine.

In comparison to their previous 4.5-qt model, this mixer  is larger in capacity and combines a 325-watt motor with a heavy duty transmission that provides constant power even when mixing heavy bread dough.

The polished stainless steel bowl is  conveniently sized to hold large batches of  mixture,  and with its wide open design it easily accommodates the beater once the tilt-back head is lowered into position.

The handle on the bowl is ergonomically designed and contoured to fit the hand, facilitating lifting and pouring. Like the other models, this one, too, features KitchenAid‘s unique mixing action – the beater moves clockwise while the shaft moves counterclockwise, enabling the beater to reach every area as it mixes.

It features 10 speeds from a very high to a very low stir. Included with your new stand mixer is a clear, two-piece pouring shield that fits around the top of the bowl, preventing splashes. A large chute lets you add ingredients along the way. Accessories include a Wire Whip, Flat Beater and Dough Hook for versatility.
