Steaming vegetables is a much healthier alternative to boiling foods to an inch of their life and removing all the valuable nutrients.

You will love having one of these Oster 5712 Electronic 2-Tier 6.1-Quart Food Steamers in your home because not only does it steam vegetables but also a myriad of other foods including fish, eggs, dim sims and even rice.

I must admit I haven’t tried rice in my steamer but I am going to give it a go now that I know that it can do it.

What We Like

  • It includes an egg holder for making soft or hard boiled eggs.
  • It comes with two steaming trays
  • It has a delay function of up to 12 hours.
  • It has a 95 minute timer which is great for a steamer. Some only have 45 minutes max.
  • It also has a keep warm setting so you can keep the food warm while you are preparing the rest of your meal.
  • The two steaming trays allow you to cook two or more different foods at the one time.
  • You can add water without having to remove the steaming trays. This is great if you find half way through steaming something that it needs more water.

Other Things to Consider

  • The parts can only be hand washed although these steamers are relatively easy to clean.
  • It will take up a bit of space when stored.

This is perfect for making a breakfast sandwich. No need to go to McDonalds to order a McMuffin – you can easily make them at home with this great little appliance.

Simply toss in some English Muffins, crack in an egg and heat up a bit of cooked sausage pattie or ham and when cooked just pop them all together to form your breakfast sandwich. If you use the Egg/Toast function then the toaster will cook everything so that it is all ready at the same time.

You can also boil up to 4 eggs in this multi-function toaster.

What We Like

  • It has a removable crumb tray.
  • The slots are wide enough to take bread, bagels (not too thick), English muffins and even croissants.

What We Don’t Like

  • It only makes one at a time.

Aluminum is also an excellent material in cookware as it ensures even heating. So you don’t get those annoying hot spots that you can get in some skillets where you have to continually move food around the pan in order for it to cook evenly.

The handle is made from 18/10 stainless steel and is riveted to ensure that it doesn’t come loose as often happens with screwed on handles.  The silicone coating on the handle ensures a comfortable and secure grip.

The skillet is oven safe to 400F which means you can transfer it straight from stove top to the oven without having to transfer the contents to an oven proof dish. This saves on clean up time too.

The skillet comes with a tempered glass lid so you can keep an eye on your food cooking without having to constantly remove the lid. It is also quite stylish looking with its stainless steel rim.

Circulon promote this skillet as having a patented Total Hard Anodized Hi-Low Food Release System. According to Circulon that means that the nonstick surface will outlast all other non-stick surfaces. They guarantee it!

This is quite a deep pan as skillets go and when it comes down to it, this could almost be classed as a saute pan. The only thing that really distinguishes this from a saute pan is the fact that it doesn’t have a helper handle and the sides are slightly flared.

The only real drawback with this skillet is that it isn’t dishwasher safe so hand washing is required. Fortunately the nonstick surface makes this relatively easy.

Kitchenaid Box GraterThe humble grater is no longer so humble now that Kitchenaid have gotten into the act. The KitchenAid Box Grater is made from 18/8 stainless steel and comes with three grating sides – find, medium and coarse – and one slicing side.

What makes this grater so good is the additional plastic food catcher that fits onto the bottom of the grater. This allows you to grate your foods directly into it. This means less mess plus the plastic container has measurements on the side so you know exactly how much your are grating without having to transfer the contents into measuring cups.

The container comes with a lid so you can store the contents of whatever you have grated in the fridge.

What We Like

  • The base of the grater is rimmed with rubber to ensure that the grater doesn’t slip across the counter when you are using it.
  • The grater is made from 18/8 stainless steel.
  • It’s dishwasher safe so you don’t have to worry about cutting your hands on this one if you have to hand wash it.

What We Don’t Like

  • It’s big so will take up a bit of storage space. Compare this with the OXO Good Grips Grater if you are looking for a similar box style grater that is easier to store.

The skillet heats up to 450F and has a non-stick surface so foods release easily from the pan and clean up is easy. This is great particularly if you don’t have a dishwasher and have to wash by hand.

The brushed stainless steel exterior and stainless steel riveted handles give this skillet an elegant look and once the temperature probe is removed this skillet will transfer nicely to the table as a serving dish.

What We Like

  • The glass lid allows you to see whats cooking without having to constantly remove the lid.
  • It’s dishwasher safe. You just need to remove the temperature probe and then you can place the whole unit in the dishwasher.
  • It comes with a recipe booklet with around 30 recipes.
  • It has a three year warranty.

What We Don’t Like

  • The cord is relatively short but this is actually a safety feature preventing the user from accidentally knocking it off the counter top.
