The Lodge Logic 8 Quart Camp Dutch Oven is sold as a camp oven but you are not limited to using it just for camping. Although not entirely practical this can be used at home on the stove top or in your oven. It’s also perfect for using in your backyard and makes a great talking point for outdoor get-togethers.

The Lodge Camp Dutch Oven arrives already pre-seasoned. This means you can just get in there and cook with it without the hassle of seasoning it first. Seasoning of bare cast iron is necessary to ensure a non-stick cooking surface as well as to protect the cast iron from rust.

The Dutch oven is fitted with legs for campfire cooking and a handle to make it easy to lift off from the hot coals – although you may want to purchase a lid lifter (sold separately) as cast iron can get extremely hot.

The recessed lid allows for hot coals to be placed on it to ensure even cooking.

If you haven’t used cast iron in the past then you need to be aware that it is heavy so if you have weak muscles or arthritis then you might need some help lifting it on and off the hot coals.

The Lodge Logic Dutch Oven does comes with instructions so you won’t be left wondering just what to do with this pot. But basically to cook in the outdoors you simply get a fire going using hot coals. Once hot enough the coals are removed and the Dutch Oven placed over the top of them. You don’t actually place the Dutch Oven over the open flame but over the coals themselves. Then you add some hot coals to the lid and then leave it to cook.

Cast iron is so reasonably priced when you compare it to other types of cookware and it lasts forever. It’s not uncommon to see cast iron that is handed down from generation to generation. Once you get the hang of it you will never look back.
