Review: Calphalon Commercial Stir Fry Pan – Healthy Stir Fry Cooking

calphalon-commercial-stir-fry-panIf you’re on a path to healthy eating or would just like a little more variety in your menu planning, you may have thought about stir-fry. The
Circulon 14-in. Nonstick Circulon Elite Stir Fry Pan
will help you keep your health in check being able to stir up large pots of veggies without all the oil or butter that you typically need to use.

At 10 inches wide and 3 inches deep, there is space enough to cook a meal for a small family in the pan, getting everyone on a healthier eating track.

Not only is the nonstick surface on the inside of the pan promising, but if you have had a stir-fry pan in the past, you know one of the flaws is the cracking and peeling that happens on the outside of the pan because of the heated surface. Not in this case. The exterior of this pan is guaranteed never to fail. And it’s also oven safe, just in case you come up with a creative way to stir-fry in the oven.

Additionally, if you are going to stir fry traditionally, you may want to be able to toss those veggies in the air a time or two. Thankfully, the Calphalon Nonstick Stir Fry Pan has been made with what is called the Cool V handle. Essentially that means it has a great grip and is easy to hold on to for all those food aerial tricks.

What We Like

  • Made to Calphalon’s professional standards, offering unsurpassed cooking performance, superior construction and lasting durability
  • This pan has a great multi-layer nonstick surface called LRS3 (Lifetime Release System) -reinforced for excellent food release and easy cleaning
  • Made of heavy gauge aluminum giving you even heat distribution and no hot spots
  • It’s oven safe to 450° F
  • The Stay Cool V stainless handle which stays cool on the stove top and  is comfortable to hold.
  • It is easy to use and cooks evenly
  • It is big enough to create a nice little meal
  • It’s lightweight and easy to store

What We Don’t Like

  • If you are planning on feeding a lot of people, you will need more than one pan.
  • It would be nice if it came with the lid or even an option to buy a fitting lid so you can keep the steam inside.

Review: Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 9-Piece Cookware Set

Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 9-Piece Cookware SetIt doesn’t matter what you need to cook, Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 9-Piece Cookware Set will make sure you can get the meal done on time.

Not only is this set of pots and pans attractive with their charcoal finish and matching lids, but also they are also very multi-functional pieces. This begins with that fact that they are nonstick without any special type of coating. The nonstick in this case comes from the stick-resistance in the metal. That means no peeling of coating and that you can, in fact, use metal utensils while cooking with these pots and pans.

The hard-anodized make up of these pots also allows for even heating on the stovetop or the broiler.

Finally, the shape of the lids on these pots will help keep your casseroles moist. The lids have a special dome shape that will drip that rising moisture right back into the pot instead of letting it stay on top of the lid and away from your food.

Included in this set are:

  • Covered Shallow Saucepan – 2 ½ Quarts With Lid
  • Skillet – 8 Inch
  • Skillet – 10 Inch
  • Skillet – 12 Inch
  • Casserole – 3 Quart With Lid
  • Casserole – 7 Quart With Lid

What We Like

  • The variety in the size of the pieces in this set makes sure you will have the right pot or pan for whatever you want to cook.
  • These pots heat evenly so you don’t have to worry about part of the meal being uncooked or burned to the bottom of the pan.

What We Don’t Like

  • Unfortunately, these are not dishwasher-safe which means hand washing and taking up more time at the sink.
  • Unless you are careful, food items will stick to the pan, which means even more clean up hassle on top of a spoiled meal.

REVIEW: Calphalon One 13in Nonstick Chef’s Skillet

calphalon-one-nonstick-chefs-skillet-13-inchI like the Calphalon One range of cookware. It’s good quality, durable and nothing sticks to it. This also means that clean up is real easy. This is important because this chef’s skillet isn’t dishwasher safe.

The Calphalon One Nonstick Chef’s Skillet is kind of a cross between a regular fry pan and a saute pan. It’s not quite a fry pan because the sides are too high and it’s not a saute pan because it has sloping sides. It doesn’t really matter as when it comes down to it, this is a very versatile skillet. You could pretty much cook anything in this one.

The pan is made from heavy gauge aluminum so it’s strong and durable and it comes with a clear glass lid so you won’t constantly have to lift the lid to see how your food is cooking.

The skillet is also oven safe to 450F. This is excellent news as it means you can transfer the pan straight from stove top to oven without having to transfer the contents into an oven safe dish.

The handle on this Calphalon One Chef’s Skillet is riveted in place so you won’t have the problem of the handle becoming loose. It’s also stays cool to touch – at least on the stove top anyway. You would still want to use oven mitts if you are going to use the pan in the oven.

This skillet has a lifetime warranty.

Teflon Cookware – The Good, the Bad, and the Just Plain Wrong

teflon-select-fry-panTeflon, the non-stick material developed by DuPont, has been the gold standard of carefree cooking since it was introduced in the 1960’s. But is this material really all that it’s cracked up to be? Learn more about the advantages, disadvantages, and misconceptions surrounding this popular material

What Is Teflon?

Teflon is a trademarked combination of fluoropolymers produced only by the DuPont company. Coating pans with Teflon created a non-stick surface. DuPont has licensed the use of Teflon to several cookware manufacturers for use in their products, meaning that you’ll find it used with brands like Calphalon, Farberware, and more.

What’s Bad About Teflon?

Non-Stick is Prone to Scratching.
One of the major disadvantages of using Teflon cookware is that it must be treated very carefully or the non-stick coating can be marred or destroyed. Teflon pans should never be used with metal utensils. If you tend to cut meat or vegetables directly in the pan, steer away from using Teflon!

Overheating Poses Risk to Animals.
Another disadvantage of Teflon is that some of its fluropolymers can emit mildly toxic gases if overheated. While this rarely has any effect on humans, birds and some other types of small animals can become sick from the fumes. You should not allow Teflon pans to reach temperatures above 300°F, and you should keep pets out of the kitchen while cooking.

Good Qualities of Teflon

More Durable than Other Non-Stick Brands.

One of the reasons why Teflon continues to be the top brand in the non-stick industry is that it is applied in layers, which do make it more durable than competitors. The bottom, rough layer allows the Teflon coating to adhere to the smooth cooking surface of a pan. A middle layer resists scraping and scratching, while the top layer provides a superior non-stick surface.

High Grade Versions Allow Use with Metal Utensils.
Some types of Teflon coatings are more scratch-resistant, meaning that they will last longer. Look for Teflon Platinum and other professional varieties for increased durability.

Food Won’t Stick or Burn.

Teflon’s multi-layer coating makes cooking much simpler. Food will not stick to the pan, which makes it less likely to burn. Coatings and batters will remain on the food where they belong, and sauces will blend more easily.

Quick and Easy Cleanup.

Cleanup is much easier with Teflon. Instead of having to scrape away cooked-on food, you can simply rinse away residue. Some Teflon pans can even be used in the dishwasher, though hand-cleaning is so simple that it might not be necessary.

Misconceptions about Teflon
One of the biggest misconceptions about Teflon pans is that flakes of the fluropolymers used in the coating are hazardous if consumed. Since Teflon pans scratch easily, this myth has dissuaded many people from using the non-stick coating. However, there is absolutely no proven heath risk to consuming Teflon flakes. The fluropolymers are inert, meaning that they will not react with your body. Scratches in your non-stick pans are only a cosmetic problem.

If anyone knows of any proven studies which show that teflon is bad for our health please leave a comment and we will write it up on this blog.
